Town Administrator Report
Mr. Warrington we are waiting for numbers from the State to begin our budget process. We are one approval away from finishing the raised crosswalks on 63rd Avenue and putting in the beacons under the Safe Routes to School grant. We submitted everything in October to SHA and would like to complete the project before the end of the fiscal year in June. Update on the All Saints Church is that they continue to move forward even though their permit has expired. They were supposed to update the Mayor and Council tonight, but cancelled and will be here for the March Town Meeting.
Police Department Report
Chief Robshaw we continue a downward spiral in crime. We did have 7 stolen autos and we had 5 recovered. Two of the stolen vehicles were running when stolen, it is illegal to warm your car unattended. Anyone who got a ticket from the Parking Authority, we will collect them and have them voided as they are not to be in Town ticketing. If issued by a PG County police officer you may have to pay that ticket. I met with a number of the Landover Shopping Center owners and many of the problems are minor. The main things are the nuisance issues. We have supplied a radio for the Cheverly watch program, which will reduce response time.
CM Riazi congratulations on a very good article in the Washington Post and I encourage everyone to look it up and read it regarding our Police Watch Program.
Chief Robshaw the improvement in technology now allows for citations for persons not making a full stop and making a right hand turn. It is a real issue with pedestrian safety in mind.
Committee Reports
Recreation Council Ms. Pejokovich reported that they are preparing for the Easter Egg Hunt on April 7th at 11am. Bring a basket or bag to collect eggs and that volunteers are needed. Also, March 1st reservations will start for the Spring Flea Market tables. It is fast approaching on April 14th and it is appreciated that the new tables have been authorized by the Mayor and Town Council for purchase.
Cheverly Day is coming along well. We will have a race. We would like to have input regarding what teens would like to do? We are getting volunteers and we would like to have advertisers as well. Invite your neighbors and friends to attend. Anyone wishing to contribute is welcome to do so, we will have the advertising rates in the near future. I am not sure if we will have contributions from residents. We did that last year because it was the 80th anniversary. This year we will be focusing on the arts and Cheverly artists.
Green Infrastructure Report the Council needs to make their appointments to the Committee. It is the year of the Oak and Arbor Day is April 11th at 10 am. Still working on Sustainable Cheverly. March 22nd Leaders for America will be cleaning out Lower Beaver Dam Creek. 250 kids come every year and pull out tons of trash. Dan Smith will be coming in the future to look at Town Park to make it more inviting with a Landscape Architect for about $500.
Planning Board will be meeting soon to discuss the Envision Cheverly planning exercise. There is a survey on line, which should be wrapping-up soon. We got about 100 responses. There will be another workshop to come up with a clear articulated vision for Cheverly.
Citizen Input
Mayor and Council Announcements
CM Riazi bittersweet news. Judith P. Hoyer Montessori program has to grow to serve middle school. So, the new location will be Oakcrest Elementary, which will allow it to expand to include middle school. Hoyer will be having their play on March 9th and 10th. Please mark your calendars. The Cheverly Actors Guild will be performing Peter Pan in May.
CM Coolen there will be 21- 3 minute acts in the upcoming talent show. Progressive Cheverly is having a lobbying night and you should contact Amil Anderson. Progressive Cheverly is having a candidate’s forum on March 1st at 7pm at Hoyer for the School Board Seat. There is a new Farmers Market manager and put on your calendar that the Market pot luck dinner will be at St. Ambrose prior to Cheverly Day.
CM Eldridge the circle at Gast Park is now gone and proved to be a success. The cost of permanent installation is prohibitive at this time. I feel it was a success in slowing down traffic.
Mayor please read your Town Newsletter it is also on line on the Town’s website since there are important things in it that we want to hear from you about. Pepco has been contacted about their reliability and the number of outages on the west side of town. We have voiced our disappointment on numerous occasions. I expect a plan from Pepco in 30-45 days. We are working with CSX to improve bike trails with a number of letters of support from the 47th Delegation. We want to know how the residents feel in order to draft a Town letter regarding the widening of the B-W Parkway. We will discuss at the Worksession: amending the refuse section of the Town Code, draft of a new ethics ordinance, re-visiting the Variance on Crest Avenue, and Capital Improvement Projects for
FY 13.
CM Eldridge perhaps we can talk about the Anacostia Trails Letter and the other thing is whether the Town would support a bicycle and pedestrian resolution for new development.
Meeting adjourned.
